I attended a "Fiber Optics and America's Broadband Future" Workshop yesterday in DC. Speakers included Erik Garr (FCC, Managing Director, Omnibus Broadband Initiative), Walter Johnston (FCC, Chief, Electromagnetic Compatibility Division), Bob Curtis (FCC Deployment Director, Omnibus Broadband Initiative) and others from the fiber industry (although no one from Verizon). What was clear from the FCC speakers and VZ's competitors is that Verizon's FIOS is now recognized, in retrospect, as the correct move (also the word cajones was used more than once to describe VZ). Most speakers admitted that the other carriers will eventually have to lay FTTH to meet the bandwidth customers will demand 5- 10 years from now.
